Airtel Axis Bank Credit Card (First Year Free): Deep Dive & Review

A comprehensive review of the Airtel Axis Bank Credit Card (First Year Free). Discover its massive 25% cashback on Airtel, 10% on utilities, and food delivery rewards.

If your monthly budget is heavily skewed towards internet bills, food delivery, and groceries, the Airtel Axis Bank Credit Card is arguably the most lucrative co-branded card on the market. With an ongoing “First Year Free” offer, it effectively eliminates the initial entry barrier.

Reward Mechanics / Main Benefits

The card focuses heavily on daily essentials and ecosystem lock-in, offering direct statement cashback:

  • 25% Cashback on Airtel: Applies to Airtel Mobile, Broadband, WiFi, and DTH bill payments made via the Airtel Thanks app.
  • 10% Cashback on Utilities: Applies to electricity, gas, and water bill payments made exclusively through the Airtel Thanks app.
  • 10% Cashback on Food & Groceries: Applies to spends on Swiggy, Zomato, and BigBasket.
  • 1% Base Cashback: On all other eligible retail spends.
  • Lounge Access: 4 complimentary domestic airport lounge visits per calendar year.

Hidden Traps / Gotchas

While the percentages look astronomically high, strict monthly caps bring the card back to earth:

  • Strict Cashback Caps: The 25% Airtel cashback is capped at ₹300 per month. The 10% utility cashback is capped at ₹300 per month. The 10% Swiggy/Zomato/BigBasket cashback is capped at ₹500 per month combined.
  • App Dependency: To get the 25% and 10% telecom/utility cashbacks, you must route your payments through the Airtel Thanks app. Direct portal payments or third-party apps like Cred or Amazon Pay won’t trigger the accelerated rates.
  • Exclusions: Fuel, rent, EMI transactions, wallet loads, and jewelry purchases do not earn the base 1% cashback.
  • Renewal Fee: While the first year is free, a ₹500 (+ GST) annual fee applies from the second year onwards unless you spend ₹2,00,000 in the previous year.

ROI Calculation

Let’s see how much a typical urban user can save in a year:

Monthly Spends:

  • Airtel Bills (₹1,200): Earns ₹300 cashback (Hitting the max cap).
  • Utility Bills (₹3,000): Earns ₹300 cashback (Hitting the max cap).
  • Swiggy/Zomato/BigBasket (₹5,000): Earns ₹500 cashback (Hitting the max cap).

Annual Math:

  • Total Monthly Cashback: ₹1,100
  • Total Annual Cashback: ₹13,200
  • Base 1% Cashback on other spends (assumed ₹10,000/mo): ₹1,200/year
  • Gross Savings: ₹14,400
  • Minus Renewal Fee (from Year 2): ₹500
  • Net Annual ROI: ~₹13,900

Verdict

Get this if: You are an active Airtel subscriber for mobile or broadband and frequently order from Swiggy, Zomato, or BigBasket. The value extraction is effortless and highly rewarding.

Skip this if: You don’t use Airtel services or prefer premium travel rewards and milestone benefits. Without the 25% Airtel kicker, there are better utility and lifestyle cards available.
